Pedaling toward a smarter future: A World Bike Day celebration

It’s not just a bike. It’s how smart people move.

Every year on June 3rd, the world comes together to elevate cycling—not just as a way to get around, but as a symbol of freedom, efficiency, well-being, and care for the planet.

This year, the Clean Mobility Collective and its partners joined in from across the globe—sharing stories, reflections, and actions both on the ground and online. Together, we’re proving that cycling is more than movement—it’s a movement. And it’s one with the power to reshape our cities.

In Southeast Asia

In Penang, Malaysia, the team at Bike Commute USM marked World Bike Day with an awareness campaign calling for 30km/h speed limits to make university streets safer and more bike-friendly. Volunteers handed out stickers and raised banners at key spots—proving that culture change can start with a simple, visible message.

In Thailand, the Thailand Walking and Cycling Institute (TWCI) joined the celebration online, sharing reflections on how cycling improves not just health and air quality, but our sense of community.

Meanwhile in Bangkok, the Bangkok Urban Cycling Alliance (BUCA) and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) held a World Bicycle Day gathering at City Hall. Governor Chadchart and two Deputy Governors listened directly to cycling groups’ proposals in a welcoming space that invited public input. The question on the table was simple but powerful: What should the city do to promote cycling? Responses came in through post-its, comments, and conversation—from allowing bikes in parks and on the metro at all times, to building bike lanes along canals to connect communities, adding ramps on pedestrian bridges, improving bike parking, and more. This was advocacy in action.

In Jakarta, Transport for Jakarta released a video highlighting bike access on the MRT: non-folding bikes are allowed at four stations during off-peak hours. They also reminded riders that mutual respect, signage, and staff guidance can make cycling and transit a smooth match.

And in Quezon City, Philippines, 350 Pilipinas shared the day with the city’s GTD-DPOS to host a community bike ride—distributing food and bike essentials to cyclists and people biking to work. The message was clear: cyclists belong, and when we support them, everyone wins.

In India

In New Delhi, the Raahgiri Foundation launched Urban Adda on World Bicycle Day with a group ride from India Habitat Centre. The multi-day forum invites experts, youth leaders, and community voices to shape a shared, sustainable future.

In Latin America

In Colombia, the campaign Métele Pedal published cycling facts and curiosities to spotlight its power to transform lives.  Just two days a week on a bike, they noted, could save a person in Bogotá around 150,000 $ colombian pesos (COP) a month… the price of groceries! Beyond stats, the campaign reminds us that cycling isn’t just practical—it can literally add years to your life.

Across the region, Bicycle Mayors from the BYCS Network came together to release a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to sustainable mobility, social justice, and the right to safer, healthier, and more human-centric cities for everyone. Because the bicycle is more than a means of transportation: it is a tool for equity, inclusion, and urban transformation.

The global identity of cycling

At the heart of all these efforts is a simple belief: cycling is smart. It frees us from traffic and parking headaches, supports our well-being by reducing stress and improving health, saves time and money, and helps build cleaner, quieter, and more connected cities. Around the world, individuals and partners came together in a collective video campaign to celebrate this new meaning of smart — one grounded in freedom, care, and community.

People everywhere are choosing cycling as the way forward. On World Bike Day — and every day — we celebrate this smarter choice. Together, we’re not just moving; we’re transforming streets for people, not pollution.
