Unpacking delivery mosquito bikes in Bogotá: Insights & perspectives

Métele Pedal conducted a research study in Bogotá to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges surrounding motorized bicycles, commonly known as "mosquito bikes," examine their multiple dimensions, and identify key insights for effective solutions. These vehicles have become essential for last-mile delivery due to their affordability and speed, but they also contribute to air pollution, road safety risks, and precarious labor conditions. Our research revealed that 41% of delivery workers depend on these bikes to meet platform demands, yet 89% lack occupational risk insurance, leaving them unprotected in case of accidents. Meanwhile, 88% of customers prioritize fast delivery, though they are open to sustainable alternatives if service quality remains the same. Despite their growing presence, regulatory gaps create legal uncertainty, and enforcement disproportionately targets workers rather than the platforms that profit from their labor.
Based on our study, Métele Pedal has designed communication and advocacy recommendations tailored to workers, policymakers, businesses, and customers, addressing their specific roles in transforming urban delivery systems. These recommendations aim to raise awareness, promote informed decision-making, and drive action toward fair and sustainable solutions. Engaging each stakeholder, we can foster a shift toward cleaner alternatives while ensuring that delivery workers are supported in the transition. By transforming urban delivery systems, we aim to build cleaner, safer, and more equitable cities.
